Video pace analyser

Working prototype, calibrated on one reference video. With the default settings it reports 10 cuts on that video, which is approximate. Treat results as indicative only.

This free tool helps parents and teachers measure features of a YouTube video, such as how often it cuts between shots and how much it flashes, so they can compare them with the pace and stimulation criteria in the early years guidance from the UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE), which sets education policy in England.

What it measures

Cut rate, mean and median shot length, and a screening measure of rapid brightness changes. It does not measure audio, plot complexity, repetition, adverts, autoplay or how adults use the screen.

What it does not do

It is not an official rating and is not endorsed by the UK Government’s Department for Education (DfE). The numbers describe features of a video, not its effect on a child.

Your privacy

Analysis happens in your browser. Video frames are examined on your device and discarded, and we receive no video data. The tool asks permission to share your browser tab. The YouTube player only loads after you choose to enable it, which contacts YouTube (Google). You can download your results as files, but they are saved only to your own device: we do not receive, store or keep your results or the videos you analyse. See the privacy notice.
